Routine Investigations
Knee
X-rays: Routine weight-bearing views are the first line imaging required. They should include:
- Standing AP in extension
- Rosenberg or skiers view
- Standing lateral at 30deg flexion
- A skyline Patellar
MRI: Should not be ordered routinely where x-rays show osteoarthritis particularly if the patient is over 60 years of age. MRI should be ordered if the following are suspected:
- Meniscus tear
- Ligament injury
- Cartilage injury
- Patellar instability
- Malignant disease
Hip
X-rays: Routine weight-bearing views are the first line imaging required especially in osteoarthritis. They should include:
- Standing AP pelvis
- Lateral hip
MRI: Rarely of use in osteoarthritis. MRI should be ordered when the following is suspected:
- Young patient
- Labral tear
- Trochanteric pain
- Malignant disease
